Concept
Evidence
Records that let someone else check a claim, graded by how much weight they can bear.
Definition
Evidence is what a claim rests on: signed receipts, transparency log entries, replay records and, at higher rungs, custody and methods records. Every piece of evidence carries an evidence grade, a rung on the detection continuum, which says what it can support and what it cannot.
Shape
interface EvidenceGrade {
rung: 0 | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5;
confidence: { point: number | null; low: number | null; high: number | null; method: "wilson" | "none" };
support: "in_calibration" | "outside_calibration" | "uncalibrated";
basis: string[];
knownErrorRates: { metric: string; value: number; denominator: number; source: string }[];
biasRisks: string[];
nextStep: string;
}
Invariants
| Invariant | Checked by |
|---|---|
| A confidence ships with measured error rates or not at all. | packages/identity/src/identity-fusion.test.ts: "confidence ships with measured error rates or not at all" |
| A tampered evidence pack fails loudly: a receipt edit, a hash edit and a redaction edit all fail. | packages/transparency/src/evidence-pack.test.ts: "a tampered pack fails loudly" |
| The docs never show a grade above what its evidence supports. | apps/docs/test/content.test.ts |
Out of scope
- Admissibility. Courts decide what evidence they accept.
- A grade is not a verdict about a person.
